Psalm 92: 4 and 5
"For you make me glad by your deeds, O Lord,
I sing for joy at the work of your hands.
How great are are your works, O Lord,
how profound your thoughts !

I baked this awesome cheesecake !!!
After looking at tons of cheesecake recipes, I finally found one I liked and tweeked it a wee bit. This is a vanilla choc. swirl with a vanilla, choc. almond crust. And yes, it was as good as it looks. I did learn two things with this first cheesecake. Do not over beat your batter and don't over cook. I will post the recipe as soon as I figure out where I put it.

My Mighty Hunter is at it again......Part 3
I am afraid of guns....always have been. And I have never wanted them in the house. My dear husband has always respected that desire, even when we moved to the country and most everyone out here has various types of arsenals. So, to ease his inner hunter, he purchased a B.B. rifle.
Out here in the country, you have all kinds of hunting of all kinds of varmits. From huge deer to sweet little quail and doves. During the various hunting seasons the local men love to get together early in the morn to share coffee, talk about their crops, and talk hunting. (I think there is a good deal of "backy " chewing going on as well.) My husband loves these gatherings and always tells me the local news when he returns home. (He has made many friends that he admires and respects in this community)
Well, I have told you about my fear of guns and the gatherings and hunting. Now I am going to tell ya'll about the mice.
During the first two weeks that we lived in this house we captured and killed over twenty mice. This is a relatively new house too and I never dreamed that we would have to deal with such a problem. (Our old house that we moved from was around ninety years old and we only had about two mice a year !) After those two weeks , I finally called the county Agr. Extension office and talked to an agent about how to control this plague of rodents. What was his response!? He laughed and said, "Mamam, this is the country, and you are in their territory !" "Everybody out here has to deal with this on a seasonal basis."
Great I thought. So, the quail barns and the corn field and the wheat and hay fields were homes for mice when the weather is nice. Sure enough every fall and spring ,here they would come. For about two weeks it would be a real battle setting traps and putting out mouse poison.
One night during invasion season I was sitting in the comfy living room recliner. This position has a clear view of the kitchen. And there was David sitting in a chair with the pantry doors open, his faithful yellow lab (Her name is Blue, David always wanted a dog named Blue) staring alertly at the pantry. David had his B.B. gun pointed through the open doors and Blue was practically on "point" . Ping went his rifle, and David proudly announced ,"Got it.....fetch Blue". Well, Blue fetched, and with tail proudly swaying surrendered that dead as a door nail mouse to her master! My mighty hunter turned towards me with his trophy dangling from his fingers, his rifle tucked under his arm and his faithful dog sitting beside him. "I got it !" he proudly said.
So if any of you hunters want to take my beloved hubby out for some real hunting, I am all for it. And yes, I have told him that it is fine with me if he buys himself a real rifle! And I also would rather us use traps instead of "rifle" method.

Are you sitting or setting ?....My favorite teacher.
The other day I read a post on a web site that had a big ole list of dos and dont's for blogging. One of the most adamant was to always use proper and correct grammar. (and spelling) You would not want to be called to task by your readers would you? Well, Eng/Lit was my best subject in school. (Except my junior year when I was in the same class with a friend. We were warned by our teacher to stop exchanging notes in class or we would both be failed. We didn't ....she did!! That summer we both had to attend summer school, but not in the same class.)
To be honest I really did enjoy Eng./Lit. very much and usually made very good grades. But it was in Jr. High that I first really began to appreciate these subjects, although at the time I did not know it.
In the 9th grade our homeroom teacher would come into the class after the bell rang. We would all be sitting at our desks gazing at the daily scripture verse and inspirational quote on the board. I can still see her now. We all thought she was a bit odd and funny looking. She had a huge blond streak at the front of her brown hair , big gold hoops in her ears, and wore a lot of sweaters and wool skirts. Sometimes she would wear her favorite animal print scarf tied around her neck. ( Little did we know that her clothes were purchased from Montaldos', a very upscale women's store in Charlotte. And her soft colorful leather shoes were expensive Papagalos. She was in fact a very elegant woman, an excellent teacher, and really loved her students and loved teaching them and tried to instill a bit of class into all of us.
Personal hygiene was high on her list. She tried to encourage us girls to be sparing in our make up and to be modest and above all for all students to make a habit of daily use of soap and deodorant. I recall how she would gently look at us all and say, "Now class someone in the room has really bad body odor today. I am not going to say who it is but they are on the left side of the room. Now, if anyone in here does not have access to soap, shampoo or deodorant they can come to me privately and I will buy them some. We all thought this was hilarious and quite frankly, I don't think anyone ever took up her offer.
She wanted us to be exposed to culture too. So, The whole 9th grade was taken to an opera I do not remember what it was (Maybe Les Miserables) We were all encouraged to wear our best clothes and be on our best behavior and not act like a bunch of country yahoos. ( My words, not hers.) I remember that I sat by my friend Pat and we giggled quietly through most of it. (Especially when a man sang "I'm freezing". and the other responded , " Me too." )
Besides, having culture, modesty, and good hygiene, we were encouraged to use proper English in our speech. Now all of this was in addition to learning tons of poetry, grammar and literature.
I have never been a whiz at memorizing and Mrs. H. like all teachers had us learning the strangest poems like....
Flower in the crannied wall,
I pluck you out of the crannies.
I hold you here, root and all, in my hand.
Little flower-but if I could understand
What you are, root and all,and all in all
I should know what God and man is.
(Lord Alfred Tennyson)
For the life of me I never could figure out why this poem was so important.
Or the long, sad poem , Captain, oh my Captain (By Walt Whitman)
I think I managed to get through Flower in the Crannied...but I know I never got all the way through Captain, oh my Captain. Matter of fact I can still recall that disastrous day.
Ninth grade and years following were not good years. There were a lot of difficult times and this particular year my father up and left my Mom, myself and my four sisters. Mom did not have a job, we had to move....etc. Having to deal with home life AND learn epic poems was just too much and I did not even try. The day came when it was my turn to recite. About all I knew was the title. Mrs. H. scolded me and then said that my mother would not be very happy if she knew I wasn't doing my homework. I told her, "My mother could care less if I did my homework or not !" And then I ran crying from the room. After about fifteen minutes of me crying in the girls bathroom, Mrs. H came in. I told her what was going on at home and we talked awhile. She seemed to be understanding, but I learned a valuable lesson from her that day. No matter what goes on in our lives we are the only ones who have to pay the consequence of our actions or reactions.
After poring my heart out to her, she was going to make me go back to the classroom and apologise to my classmates, and I was supposed to let them think it was my idea. (She went to the teachers hangout for a few minutes to give me the chance to do this.) And what did I say!? Class Mrs. H. said for me to apoligise for disrupting the class, but not to let ya'll know that it was her idea, not mine. ( I was a naughty girl !)
But what my peers did not know, was that day I got "it"...what she wanted us to learn, what she wanted us to be ...honorable, educated, well rounded. She wasn't out to get us, she really cared about us.
Years later at Stunptown Festival, I was touring the Reid House in Matthews. And sitting (not setting) in a chair in the hall was Mrs. H. She was probably in her late seventies at that time. Same blond streak in her hair, gold earrings, the same elegance that she wore so well. It was as if she was holding court. She was surrounded by men and women of all ages. "Mrs. H. you made such a difference in my life... Do you remember me ....this is my child, I wish she could have had a wonderful teacher like you...Thank you for all you taught me.." These were just some of the comments I managed to hear being addressed to her. And then, it was my turn, " Mrs. H. you made such a difference in my life, this is my daughter, thank you for all you taught me...Do you remember me Mrs. H.? I was in that last ninth grade class that you taught in Matthews." She looked at me, took my hands between her hands and gave me a very special smile! "Yes, I remember you." And I know she did.
This weekend there will be a reunion of the last five years of Matthews Jr. High. My husband will be there, but I will be unable to attend. So, I hope that when you all speak of our past teachers you will remember all our special teachers.
Just one other thing, I looked up the meaning of the above mentioned poems. According to yahoo answers, "Tennyson's concept of God is an infinite principle that can't be grasped by the finite mind." And I say, Amen to that.

What a good idea. I don't know how many dried up markers I have thrown away over the years. I am going to try this myself. As for the smell, it might be a good idea to boil water first and then add maybe two drops of bleach to each tub. That might keep bacteria from forming.

Kids Say The Darndest Things Art Linkletter 1959
_____________________________________________________________
Many of you may not have even heard of Art Linkletter, but his Kids say...segments were and still are some of my favorite. The things that kids come up with, say and do, have delighted and cheered folks for years. (Including myself)
I love reading the sayings of all my Facebook friends children and hearing first hand from my kids and grandkids. I especially have had many a chuckle over the sayings and doings of one of my young FB friends...(Your Mom knows who I am talking about). This young man is one of my favorites even though he once told his mother that I was the meanest Sunday school teacher in the world. (I was constantly having to remind him not to climb out the window, we do not stand on the table and it really is not a good idea to lock the teacher out of her class room.)
Once, when my friend was about five years old, another friend and I were keeping him in the church nursery during worship. It was after Christmas and I was telling the other nursery helper how I had been a glutton and eaten way more than my share of sweets during the holiday season. I even listed some of the sweeter moments and noticed that my young friend was attentively listening to every word. His eyes got bigger and bigger as my list got longer and sweeter. "Why did you eat all that Debbie ? " my adult friend asked. I guess it is because I have a sinful nature was my reply. After having heard of all the wonderful goodies that I had consumed, I had just shown my young friend how he too could have such things, for he quickly and very fervently said "I WANT ONE OF THOSE ! (sinful nature.) This young man will be marrying soon and Lord willing someday he and his wife will delight in the laughter and joy over the darndest things that their kids say.

Green acres we are here.......
Photo by Deborah Our garden free of weeds ready to be planted ... spring 2011
Photo by Deborah... Our home.. "Grapes In the Wilderness Farm"
Photo by Deborah...The vineyard Fall 2011.
Dave and I moved out here in the country about nine years ago. All our married life it had been a dream of his and an unsubmissive " no way..." on my part. And as our home became older and in need of extensive , costly repairs, we both began to yearn for a new home. For years our quiet little side street had become A fast cut through for those trying to avoid the downtown area and slow traffic lights.
So, here we are on almost 5 acres of land with dogs, chickens, rabbits and a pony. And we are really in the country. With farmers and chicken house owners, horse breeders And beef raisers. A far different world from what we were used to. I still remember a conversation with a farmers wife shortly after we moved here. I was making a call for Dave to this ladies husband. May I speak to your husband, I said. " He ain't in the house right now. One of the bulls has done jumped the fence and gotten in with the cows." ..... Never in my life would I have thought I would be having a conversation about somebodies cows and bulls.
In less than a month we realised that everybody waved or acknowledged every one they passed on the road . Actually it is a form of art, cause every one has their own way of doing it. There is the basic ... turn loose of the steering wheel and throw up your hand briefly , the keep your thumb hooked around the top of the wheel and raise the other four fingers, the one finger, two finger etc. (So far I haven't seen any "princess waves.") And my favorite, the point with the finger and click your tongue at the same time. (David) I am just a plain ole throw up my hand halfway.
Another thing I learned , is when you pass someone who is waiting in their drive , make sure you look them in the eye, throw up your hand and give them a big ole smile like they are your best friend. Why ? Because every one drives 60 miles an hour down these hilly, curvy roads and you don't want them dogging your bumper all the way to town. So you see, if you act like they know you they won't try to run you over when they pull out behind you.
I do love it out here. The people are truly what you call the salt of the earth. It gets real lonely out here in the day, but all you have to do is go to the nearest grocery store and I can guarantee you can strike up more than three interesting and enjoyable conversations with total strangers...."Hi there, did you plant any maters this year? " Asked an elderly man in the milk aisle. Yeah, but they haven't been worth a hoot...all of ems got dry rot. "Yeah know what you mean mines got it too. And it sure is a bad year for corn..." I have talked to people about their kids, grand kids, dogs ,cats, their crops, the weather, the price of hay....but never any gossip about anyone. People in this area genuinely care for their neighbors and are willing to befriend any newcomers, like Dave and myself.
I've learned names of tractors, kinds of tractors, crops of this area... soy beans, corn ,winter wheat cotton, hay crops and sometimes fields of sunflowers. We have gotten used to the smelly times when chickens house are being cleaned out or a load of chicken poo is spread on the field in the front of our house. (Chicken houses do not smell all the time.) How to tell the difference between hay (fescue or coastal) and wheat straw.
And have I mentioned the fire ants ? Now I sure could live without them. I always keep liquid benedryl in case someone gets bitten. You have to keep an eye out where you stand or walk, because you could be covered in them before they even start biting !
One thing that does bother me, is the way people treat their dogs . Most do not get them rabie shots and allow them to roam free. Or they chain those poor animals to a dog house for years and years and just go out to see them once a day to feed and water them..
Peace and quiet, a rooster crowing, gentle wind swishing through the wheat , the rattling and shaking sounds of dried corn stalks and the church bells ring out the time followed by ten minutes of hymns......ah can't beat this.
EXCEPT, during hunting season ! All day long you can hear bam, bam, bam. And ahwooo, ahwoo of hunting dogs. ( To be continued..)

My Mighty hunter is at it again......Part 2
Now before I tell you how we finally got rid of our visitors , I would like to say that there were many "solutions' on the web and I am sure most of them must have worked for folks..(if not, the world would surely be over run by fruit flies !)..but they just did not work on my country flies. However the most unusual remedy was from a gal who said to take your own plastic bags from home and take any fruit or veggies you are going to buy into the restroom and wash and re-bag them . (Does she really do this ? Has she never seen the DO NOT TAKE MERCHANDISE INTO RESTROOMS ? I would never take food into a germ filled public restroom !!! Was she trying to pull someones leg !? Wish I had bookmarked her web post. )
Okay, yes our problem was solved. I put out some apple pieces on the counter to use as bait. Got out my vacumn cleaner and put on the hose attachment. The apple bait drew all of them to one spot and then I would cut on the cleaner and sneak up on them and .......Swoosh...they would go up the hose ! Bye-Bye ! About every hour I would check the lure area. And yeah, this did work !! (You just need to be sure and not get too close to the apples or they get sucked up too !)
The fruit flies are gone now and my walls are clean and I thank God that He gives of senses of humor. But if you ever have fruit fly problems, just come to us, WE know how to deal with it !
